About this beach

Full description

Playa Las Ánimas is one of the most famous and accessible beaches on the south coast of Puerto Vallarta. It is known for its vibrant atmosphere, calm waters, and the large number of palapa restaurants that offer a complete beach experience. Beach Description Las Ánimas is a beach with soft, golden sand and very gentle waves, making it ideal for free swimming and for children. Like other southern destinations, it is surrounded by the dense vegetation of the Sierra Madre, creating a beautiful contrast between the jungle and the sea. Atmosphere and Services: Unlike more pristine beaches such as Colomitos or Madagascar, Las Ánimas is a highly developed tourist destination. You will find a long row of restaurants with palapas that offer umbrellas, lounge chairs, and an extensive menu of fresh seafood, pescado zarandeado (grilled fish), and tropical drinks. Activities: It is an excellent spot for free swimming, banana boat rides, or kayaking. It is the perfect destination for those looking to spend the entire day enjoying services right on the sand.

How to get there

As we have mentioned, the defining feature of the south coast is the lack of roads. Therefore, access to Las Ánimas is exclusively by sea or via very difficult mountain trails. The Best Option: Water Taxi from Boca de Tomatlán This is, by far, the most recommended, fastest, and most economical way to visit the beach: Head to Boca de Tomatlán: Take the southbound bus (sign "Boca de Tomatlán") from the stop at Basilio Badillo and Constitución in the Romantic Zone of Puerto Vallarta. The cost is approximately $10-$15 MXN. Take the Boat: Once in Boca, head to the pier or the river's edge to catch a water taxi (panga). Cost and Time: The boat ride to Las Ánimas only takes 10 to 15 minutes. The cost for a round trip is approximately $260 MXN per person (if you take the regular service). Other Options (Less Recommended): From Puerto Vallarta (Los Muertos Pier): Although there are boats that leave directly from Los Muertos Pier in the Romantic Zone, they are usually more expensive since the trip is much longer. Walking: There is a trail connecting Boca de Tomatlán to Las Ánimas. We warn that the hike is long, difficult, and strenuous, and not suitable for everyone. We strongly recommend using the water taxi.

Expert tip

Many people believe high season (winter) is the best, but that's not always true for swimming! The best season for swimming and finding warm waters and relaxed waves is during the rainy season, from June to October. The water temperature is higher, and the sea is generally calmer. Warning: Although October can be affected by hurricanes, it is unlikely that one will directly impact the area. High Season (Winter): During this season, the waves can be stronger, and the water temperature can become noticeably cooler compared to the rainy season.
