Description

Arriving at Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) can be confusing. Understanding the taxirules and fares is key to starting your vacation stress-free. Here we break down what you should expect to pay. 1. The Federal Taxi (The Easiest and Most Direct Option) These official taxis operate inside the terminal and have fixed, pre-paid fares based on zones. It is the most comfortable, fastest option, and if you are traveling with lots of luggage, it is the most convenient. The Companies: There are three main companies operating inside: Aero Móvil (generally the most expensive), TPV Taxis, and TRIP Vallarta (generally the most economical). Fares (Approximate, 2025): Marina/Hotel Zone (Sedan): From $320 MXN (TRIP Vallarta) up to $343 MXN (Aero Móvil). Downtown/Romantic Zone (Sedan): From $490 MXN up to approximately $530 MXN. South Zone (Mismaloya/Van): Expect to pay over $1,100 MXN. 2. Uber/DiDi or Local Yellow Taxi (The Intermediate Option) This is an option to save money, but it requires walking outside federal property and a strategic pickup. The Pedestrian Bridge: By federal law, Uber/DiDi and city yellow taxis cannot pick up passengers inside the terminal. To use them, you must cross the elevated pedestrian bridge located to the left of the terminal exit. Savings vs. Convenience: The savings from crossing the bridge are significant (approximately $50 to $150 MXN to the Romantic Zone), but if you have a lot of luggage, the effort of going up and down the bridge is NOT worth it for that price difference. On the Other Side: Once you are across the street: Uber/DiDi: The cost to the Malecón/Romantic Zone is usually $180 to $250 MXN. Pickup Warning: If you order Uber, DO NOT board it at the bus stop. You must walk one block forward or backward, as traffic police fine platform drivers who pick up customers in the bus-exclusive loading zone. 3. Pre-Booked Private Transfer (The Exclusive Option for Groups) Ideal for large groups who want a seamless, no-wait welcome. Reference Cost: A private service with a 3-row SUV (capacity for a maximum of 6 people with luggage) can start from $1200 MXN. 4. Public Bus (The Most Economical Option) The fare costs only $10 MXN per person. Bus Stop: If your destination is Puerto Vallarta (Downtown, Hotel Zone, etc.), you DO NOT need to cross the pedestrian bridge. The stop is on the airport side, near the highway. You only need to cross the bridge if you are going to destinations in Riviera Nayarit (Nuevo Nayarit, Bucerías, Sayulita, etc.). Drawbacks: The bus has no designated space for large luggage. They can be very crowded, and the stops are not directly at your hotel/destination. ⭐ Expert Tip: The Least Stressful Transport is Federal! Convenience over Savings: Unless your budget is very restricted, the federal taxi inside the airport is the least stressful option if you are traveling with many bags or in a group, as the price difference with Uber does not always justify the bridge hassle. The Bus Stress: The bus is the cheapest option, but the city has poor public transport infrastructure. Many buses do not have air conditioning and can take too long to arrive or be very crowded, making the journey a stressful experience. Pay in MXN: Always pay in Mexican Pesos (MXN). Use reliable ATMs inside the airport. The exchange rates offered by taxi drivers or vendors are always unfavorable!
